WFNMB and ICPO Foundation partner to advance theranostics worldwide

The Federation and the ICPO Foundation have agreed to cooperate on advancing theranostics worldwide, with ICPO joining as an associate member.

The World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology and the International Centers for Precision Oncology (ICPO) Foundation have agreed to work together to advance theranostics worldwide. The agreement was signed in February 2026 at the WFNMB World Congress in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, and brings the ICPO Foundation into the Federation as an associate member.

The cooperation aims to widen access to precision oncology — particularly in low- and middle-income countries — to raise clinical standards, advance research, and strengthen education for healthcare professionals. WFNMB President Dr Savvas Frangos linked the partnership to the implementation of World Health Assembly Resolution WHA78.13 on strengthening medical imaging capacity. The Federation has been recognised by the World Health Organization as the only non-state actor in nuclear medicine since 2019.

Through its Academy for Theranostics, the ICPO Foundation runs an online education programme alongside practical training at selected clinical centres, and is building a network of accredited theranostics centres to help services align with international standards. General Secretary Dr Gisela Estrada described the partnership as joining the Federation's global network of societies with ICPO's expertise in theranostics education and centre development.

As a first step, the Federation is pleased to share the ICPO Theranostics Virtual Summit 2026, held online on 12–13 November 2026 — a multidisciplinary programme chaired by Richard P. Baum, Frederik L. Giesel and Rudolf A. Werner. Details and registration are on the ICPO Foundation website, and the summit is listed on the Federation events page.
